Hill and Harrison (1987) reviewed the genus and recognized seven subgenera (Pipistrellus, Hypsugo, Falsistrellus, Perimyotis, Arielulus, Vespadelus, and Neoromicia), but most of these groups are now recognized as distinct genera.
