 Comments

Comment: When Linnaeus named the Pine Warbler Certhia pinus Linnaeus, 1766 (p. 187) (Vermivora pinus is a subsequent combination) he proposed it based upon 2 historical illustrations, one from Catesby (plate 61) and one from Edwards (plate 277). In the main text Edwards asserts his bird is the same as Catesby's, but there is a self-contradictory footnote by Edwards on page 141 that reads 'On further examination I think it a species different from Catesby's.' Linnaeus ignored the footnote when he proposed Certhia pinus. Wilson (1810) was the first to restrict the application of pinus to the pine warbler (p. 25) illustrated by Catesby, and applied solitaria to the species in Edwards' illustration, the Blue-winged Warbler. The name for the Blue-winged Warbler would be solitaria Wilson, 1810, but it is a junior homonym of Sylvia solitaria Lewin 1808. Olson and Reveal (2009) lectotypified the Blue-winged warbler and gave the blue winged a new name: cyanoptera Olson and Reveal, 2009
