 Comments

Comment: In 1896, Bingham described the male of "Megachile ceylonica, sp. nov. (Plate XV. fig. 9.)" (not ceylonensis) on page 453 and on page 459 in the Explanation of Plate XV, Fig. 9. In 1912, on page 464 of his Notes on Apidae publication, Meade-Waldo listed a different name for the female - 'Megachile ceylonensis' referencing Bingham's 1897 publication and published Megachile caroli as a replacement name for the female. Meade-Waldo claimed that "The species was recorded as 'M. ceylonica' [on page 482 of Bingham's 1897 publication] through an oversight, as it is correctly named in the key to the species [on page 472]...The insect...described as the female of M. ceylonensis can have no affinity with it." However examination of Bingham's key on page 472 does not support Meade-Waldo's claim and clearly lists "M. ceylonica" (not ceylonensis)
Megachile ceylonica Bingham, 1896 (TSN 761214), male not female, is a junior synonym of Megachile conjuncta Smith, 1853 (TSN 767826); while Megachile ceylonica Bingham, 1896 (TSN 761214), female not male, is a junior synonym of Megachile caroli Meade-Waldo, 1912
