  Comment: 'Sund (1915) considered E. faxoni to be the larva of "Polycheles sculptus" (= Stereomastis sculpta (Smith, 1880)) because of the similar spines of the carapace. Bernard (1953) fully agrees with him because of his richer material from the Dana Expedition 1928-30.' (Tiefenbacher, 1995). However, Torres et al. (2014) contest that E. faxoni and two other specimens described in Eryoneicus 'could not be accepted as larval stages of S. sculpta and perhaps belong to adult species that still have to be discovered.'
