  Comment: This species was included in the acount of Mesoprion griseus in Cuvier and Valenciennes (1828). Both this species and Mesoprion aya Cuvier in Cuvier and Valenciennes, 1828 (not of Bloch) seem to be based on the same drawing by Plumier of an individual with four anal spines. Fricke et al.
