  Comment: Woods & Kilpatrick (2005) mention published suggestions that "Molina's (1782) Mus laniger was a composite based on no known specimens," and that Bennett's (1829) use of Chinchilla lanigera, although derived from Molina's Mus laniger, made the name available there in its own right.
