  Comment: Although recent aquarist literature has recognized Amphacanthus margaritiferus Valenciennes in Cuvier & Valenciennes, 1835 as a distinct species (as Siganus margaritiferus), the last taxonomic work to review the group (Woodland 1990) treated it as a junior synonym of Siganus fuscescens (Houttuyn, 1782). ITIS is following the taxonomic publication over the aquarist literature
