'A distinctive form of Quadrula asperata, described as Quadrula archeri Frierson, 1905, is restricted to the Tallapoosa River above the Fall Line. [...] At a minimum it warrents subspecific status, as it is morphologically distinct, occurs in a geographically defined area and was isolated by the falls at Tallassee, Elmore County, Alabama, prior to impoundment of the Tallapoosa River. Evaluation of Quadrula asperata archeri is especially critical because additional impoundments [...] could drive it to extinction' (Williams, Bogan, and Garner, 2008) |
