Navás proposed the name Rhaphidioptera in 1916, in the belief that the genus was correctly spelled Rhaphidia, and that Linnaeus had coined the genus with that spelling. However, Linnaeus seems to have spelled it as Raphidia, and that spelling, along with Raphidiidae are accepted as the correct spellings for the genus and family. Martynov (1938) emended the spelling to Raphidioptera, and that is here treated as a justified emendation. Kluge (2005) asserted that Navás' spelling has 'priority,' but the Principle of Priority (ICZN) is not applicable above the family-group ranks |
