  Comment: Nelson (1994), who treated this taxon as a tentative subfamily of the Characidae, used the spelling -iinae, whereas Murray & Stewart (2003) used -idae. Eschmeyer's current online Catalog of Fishes (2004) uses the spelling Alestiidae
