  Comment: Status: IUCN - Lower Risk (lc)  
    Comments: Reviewed by Corbet and Hill (1992:289-90). Formerly included baluensis; but the two are often sympatric (Payne et al., 1985). Heaney (1978) discussed body size variation in this species. Oshida et al. (1996b) described chromosomes  
    Note that Thorington et al. (2012:148-149) state that there are 47 named subspecies, but only list 17 of them by name. Another 15 are suggested in their statement that 'there are also 15 smaller islands with named populations on them'
