A well-defined species sharply distinct from the parapatric or marginally sympatric M. chrysogaster; see Kao (1963), Groves (1976), and Grubb (1982a), yet treated as a synonym of M. moschiferus sifanicus (= M. chrysogaster sifanicus) by Sokolov and Prikhod'ko (1997)
