  Comment: According to McKenna & Bell (1997:202), the family-group name is based on Hydrocharina Gray 1825:341. Gill (1872) established the spelling Hydrochoeridae, and Cabrera (1961) changed it to Hydrochaeridae. Note also that that the generic name Hydrochoerus Brisson 1762 has been restored by ICZN Opinion 1894 (1998)
