 Comments

Comment: There is an unresolved priority conflict for the name of the family containing Margarodes Guilding 1829 and Porphyrophora Brandt in Brandt and Ratzeburg, 1833. The name Margarodidae Cockerell, 1899 (originally published as a subfamily) is in use for the family, but there is an older family-group name originally published by Signoret (1875:346) as 'Porphyrophorites' (rank not specified). The first use of this name with a clear rank seems to have been 10 years later, as family Porphyrophoridae. It is unclear at present how this priority issue will be resolved by scale insect workers, but for the moment (early 2025) ITIS will follow their current use of Margarodidae for the family
