Cimex lunatus was used for two separate species in Fabricius 1787: on page 302, species # 237, is now in Largidae under Acinocoris lunaris (Gmelin, 1790), while on page 289, species #107, is now in Coreidae under Phthia lunata (Fabricius, 1787). These were primary homonyms with identical priority. Gmelin's name change to Cimex lunaris, without comment, is taken to be a replacement or substitute name, thus establishing priority for the other Fabricius name. Unfortunately, both species have gone by Cimex lunatus and Lygaeus lunatus in the older literature |
