Cimex lunatus was used for two separate species in Fabricius 1787: on page 302, species # 237 (this name), is now in Largidae under Acinocoris lunaris (Gmelin, 1790), while on page 289, species #107 (ITIS TSN 108425), is now in Coreidae under Phthia lunata (Fabricius, 1787). These were primary homonyms with identical priority. Gmelin's name change to Cimex lunaris, without comment, is taken to be a replacement or substitute name, thus establishing priority for the other Fabricius name. Unfortunately, both species have gone by Cimex lunatus and Lygaeus lunatus in the older literature |
