Comment: First published at the rank of variety, but included here as a subspecies per ICZN Article 45.6.4
Bombus lapponicus lugubris Friese, 1902 is a senior primary homonym of Bombus lapponicus lugubris Sparre-Schneider, 1909. Both are now junior synonyms of Bombus monticola Smith, 1849 (TSN 714960)
It appears that Friese (1902) lists Bombus lapponicus var. lugubris Sp. Schneid. i. l. (in litteris) on page 495, so the name Bombus lapponicus lugubris taxonomic authorship was incorrectly attributed to Friese, 1902. Sparre-Schneider did not publish the new subspecies (variety) description until 1909
