 Comments

Comment: Authorship for Atropus armatus, as currently used, should be attributed to Rüppell (1830), rather than to Forsskål (in Niebuhr, 1775). Smith (1973) made a compelling case that Forsskål's 1775 name (Sciaena armata) is a nomen dubium whose identity cannot be determined as the description is inadequate and no type material exists. She also noted that Rüppell's citation of that name (under Citula armata) was itself uncertain, and that Rüppell's later works also indicate he considered the name Citula armata and its description were his own. Williams et al. (1980) concurred with Smith's views, and added that another of Rüppell's 1830 names (Citula ciliaria) is indeterminate and must be considered a nomen dubium, going on to assign lectotypes and paralectotypes for Citula armata Rüppell, 1830. Fricke (2008) apparently overlooked Smith (1973), and Williams et al. (1980), and treated Forsskål's name as available and applicable to what's now known as Atropus armatus, and some subsequent authors (e.g., Kimura, 2022) followed Fricke's usage
