  Comment: Some treat fontinalis Hollister 1911 as a synonym or subspecies of Sorex cinereus Kerr 1792, while others treat them as distinct species. Dr. Hoffmann (personal communication, May 2004) recommended treating them as distinct species. Hutterer (in Wilson & Reeder, eds., 2005), however, retains it as a subspecies of S. cinereus
