    The date of publication for the species Dendrohyrax dorsalis, originally Hyrax dorsalis, is apparently mid-1954 (no earlier than 23 May). The date for a currently-recognized subspecies D. d. sylvestris (fide Wilson & Reeder, eds., 2005) may be 1853, and if that is the case then sylvestris should take priority for the species name over dorsalis. Pending further clarification on these issues, ITIS is following the years for these taxa as given by Jones (1978), which supports recent usage
