 Comments

Comment: Until very recently, Gastrophysus Müller, 1843 was widely understood to be typified by the species Tetraodon lunaris Bloch & Schneider 1801 (based on Jordan's action in 1919, p.196), which is now placed in Lagocephalus Swainson 1839. Kottelat (2013:476) pointed out that a prior typification was made by Bleeker (1865:46), where the type was given as T[etraodon] oblongus Bloch 1786, which is also the type species of Takifugu Abe, 1949. If accepted, approximately 26 Takifugu species would instead be recognized as species of Gastrophysus, with new generic combinations. Kottelat pointed out 'the only way to continue to use Takifugu as a valid name would be to ask the ICZN to reverse precedence or to suppress Gastrophysus,' (or to reject Bleeker's typification of that genus, leaving Jordan's in place). Matsuura (2015:94) has said he will ask the Commission to do so, but no proposal has yet been presented. ITIS will revisit this matter as it develops
