 Comments

Comment: Status: IUCN - Vulnerable (as included in P. capensis?)
Comments: A distinct species according to Thomas (1902), Hollister (1918), Coe (1969), and Davies (1982). The separation of surdaster from capensis was strongly supported by Matthee and Robinson (1997) based upon genetic, morphological, and ethological differences between the East African and South African Springhares. There is no proof of the validity of subspecies
Dieterlen (in Wilson & Reeder, 2005) cites Pedetes surdaster Thomas, 1902 with parenthetical authorship, but this is in error as Pedetes surdaster is the original combination
