 Comments

Comment: Zimmerman (1948:201) notes that a prior misspelling of the hostplant vernacular ('amamau' instead of 'amaumau,' attributed to Hillebrand's Flora of the Hawaiian Islands), led Muir (1921:512) to misspell the species epithet, going on to say 'He obviously named the insect after its hostplant, and we should correct the spelling.' However, since the original publication itself spelled the 'native name' of the host plant only as 'Amamau,' and spelled the epithet only as 'amamau,' this is an unjustified emendation under the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature (per Art. 32.5.1)
