  Comment: Eschmeyer (personal communication, December 2002) suggests that Sardinella jussieui (Valenciennes in Cuvier & Valenciennes, 1847) (originally as Clupeonia jussieui Valenciennes in Cuvier & Valenciennes, 1847) and Sardinella jussieu Lacépède, 1803 (originally as Clupanodon jussieu Lacépède, 1803) are "probably the same." Since both cannot be treated as valid, ITIS is tentatively using Lacépède's older name as the valid one. Note that Whitehead (1985) treated Lacépède's name as a synonym of Sardinella gibbosa (Bleeker, 1849), while recognizing Valenciennes' name as valid
