    Comments: Revised by Baker (1954); subspecies listed by Hall (1981) and reviewed by Williams et al. (1993). Wilson (1973) considered merriami conspecific, but Anderson (1972) Lee and Engstrom (1991) documented species distinctness of merriami from flavus (see below).
