  Comment: Desoutter et al. (2001) and Munroe (personal communication, January 2003) note that Synaptura Cantor, 1849 is an "unnecessary replacement name" for Brachirus Swainson, 1839, and so is a junior objective homonym thereof. Several species have long been placed in Synaptura Cantor, 1849 (as restricted by Chabanaud in 1928, with a different type species, commersoni Lacepède, 1802), and do not yet have valid generic names. They further planned to "petition the International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature to recognize Synaptura Cantor as a valid genus name, with its type species being Pleuronectes commersoni Lacepède, 1802, as designated by Chabanaud (1928)" (though this has not yet occurred). On Munroe's recommendation, ITIS is retaining Synaptura Cantor as a valid genus name until the unresolved species are allocated to other genera in the literature, or until the matter is otherwise resolved
