  Comment: Peters (1940:111) notes that Strix wapacuthu Gmelin 1788 was based on a description that is a composite of Nyctea scandiaca (now Bubo scandiacus) and Bubo subarcticus (now B. virginianus subarcticus), and treats it as a valid subspecies of B. virginianus. Browning and Banks (1990) note that it was proposed 'for a species separate from what are now Nyctea scandiaca (Snowy Owl) and Bubo virginianus (Great Horned Owl).' Banks and Browning (1995:635) note that 'the basis for the name wapacuthu is indeterminable, but more likely a Snowy Owl (Nyctea scandiaca) than the Great Horned Owl that it is applied to' [currently Bubo virginianus subarcticus Hoy 1853]. Bubo subarcticus was proposed by Hoy (1853) and is the next available name for the Great Horned Owl
