  Comment: In his 1988 "Systematics and Phylogeny of the Anthophorine Bees", Brooks lists A. (Anthophora) subterranea Germar, 1826 on page 460 as a species included in the Melanognatha Species Group; and on page 557, in reference to his designated Neotype: Megilla subterranea, he states "There is almost no recognizable remnant of Germar's material in the museums at Berlin, [etc.]...In Paris I found material which is topotypical, agrees well with the original description and may even be type material of Germar's." The epithet with taxon author and year "subterranea Germar, 1826, An" also appears on page 573 of Appendix 3 (where he defines the suffixes 'Am' for Amegilla and 'An' for Anthophora)  
    Anthophora subterranea Germar, 1926 nomen dubium is a senior primary homonym of Anthophora subterranea Gistel, 1850 nomen dubium (both now as Anthophora canescens Brullé, 1832 (TSN 762867))
