 Comments

Comment: CITES: Appendix II listed under Hippocampus, adopted at the 15th meeting of the Conference of the Parties (Doha, 2010)
Lourie et al. (1999:97) and Lourie et al. (2004:53) note that Hippocampus guttulatus 'has been widely called H. ramulosus, but re-examination of the H. ramulosus type specimen shows that it differs from the species discussed in this guide as H. guttulatus.' In other words, these are not conspecific, the correct name for the species in question is H. guttulatus, and H. ramulosus is not its synonym. Unfortunately, they did not take a stance on what the status and placement of H. ramulosus should be (other than not in synonymy of H. guttulatus), so until a better solution is available, ITIS is listing this name as a synonym of the genus (contra a 2002 regional checklist that incorrectly listed them as synonyms under the junior name)
