  Comment: Comments: Includes Xylomys as a subgenus for H. nelsoni (see also Hall, 1981, and Williams et al., 1993), although the validity of subgenera is questionable (R. P. Anderson, pers. comm.). Revised by Goldman (1911), with systematics currently under review by R. P. Anderson (pers. comm.). Rogers and Schmidly (1982) partially revised the desmarestianus group.
