Status comments from Eschmeyer are as follows: "Valid as Lutjanus ambiguus (Poey 1860) -- (Allen 1985:54 [ref. 6843], Cervigón 1992:355 [ref. 23827]). Intergeneric hybrid between Ocyurus chrysurus (Bloch 1791) and Lutjanus synagrus (Linnaeus 1758) -- (Loftus 1992 [ref. 21221], McEachran & Fechhelm 2005:318 [ref. 28815])"
