  Comment: According to Cairns (2000) and Cairns (personal communications, April 2003) Manicina areolata mayori and M. areolata areolata are forms and, hence, have no nomenclatural significance, although they are commonly recognized in publications such as the American Fisheries Society's checklists (see Cairns et al., 2003). ITIS does not track animal forms, so the "subspecies" records have been placed in synonymy. There are no valid subspecies of Manicina areaolata
